Breaking the Rules: Hard Light Photography

I shot this creative last fall in East Vancouver and can finally share the edited photos with you. The autumn sun at high noon last November made for some hard light photographs I just love.  And to think you shouldn't shoot people at high noon...

I say, rules are meant to be broken, especially in photography and other creative pursuits.  I don't think anyone ever stumbled upon beauty while playing it safe, do you?

Big thanks to this wonderful team:

Valentine's Day Observations

As overrated as Valentine's Day is, I love baking cookies and making homemade valentines with my boys.

Here are some of my favourite photos (I just love their intense concentration on each task!).  And of course, the recipe for the cookies came from Rosie Daykin's Butter Baked Goods book - I mean, why bother trying something different when these recipes are pretty much perfection, especially for an amateur like me.

How did you spend this Valentine's Day?

Aging Beauties

If you follow my blog, you already know I love parrot tulips (you can find photos of them here
and here).  But I especially love them at the twilight of their short life, just before they fall into complete decay.  Not exactly pinterest friendly, but so what?  Sometimes the most beautiful things aren't, like in this post.

I shot these photos a couple of weeks ago while it was still "June-uary" in Vancouver.  It was one of those sunny days with clouds in the sky and the light changed quite often.  I love playing around with the unpredictability of light.  Take a look; see how it enhances the texture of the tulips?

This one especially feels almost like a watercolour or oil painting.  The bright, diffused sunlight gives the dying flowers' gradients such a soft, painterly quality.

Portrait of a Little Lady

Call me biased, but I think I'm pretty objective when I say that my niece is one of the cutest little girls in the world.  And for a mother of boys, one of the most fun parts of having a niece in the family is shopping for clothes for every special occasion.  Oh, and then taking her portrait of course!  Here she is in two of my favourite outfits - a navy blue party dress and a navy and white striped top - and a myriad of expressions...

I just love the personality she exudes, and how so many unabashed emotions can be captured in one small face!  These portraits definitely show both sugar AND spice.  Which one is your favourite?
