How to Shoot a Simple Still Life

No money to buy art? No problem.  Here are a couple of quick and dirty tips to create your own still life fine art photos using natural light.

1.  Set up in front a window.  Any window will do, but north-facing is a good idea as the light is always even and soft and you don't have to deal with the sun moving through your set over the course of a day.

In this series, I used three pieces of foam core that I taped together.  Then clipped a very large piece of white paper over the structure.

2.  Compose your shot.  Make sure there that your frame consists of only what needs to be there.

For this series, it's just the white background paper, vase and flowers.  So make sure you get rid of any distracting elements.  Less really is more.

3.  Lastly and most importantly, print and frame.  So many photos sit on a hard drive these days - don't be afraid to show off your creation!

That's it.  It's that simple.  All it takes is a willingness to experiment.  And of course, picture-perfect flowers.  These gorgeous tulips are from the Flower Factory, and the vase from Magpie.  Both stores are on Main Street in Vancouver.  So, if you're out and about, why not stop by and see what inspires you.

Four Days in Napa: Larkmead Winery

I had originally intended to share my photos from all the wineries we visited.  Larkmead Winery was, by far, my favourite - so I am featuring it all on its own.  Which images are your favourite?  For me, it's hard to pick just one.  But the red rocking chair and fire hydrant caught me off guard in such natural settings.  The cherry blossoms welcomed spring - when it was so dreary in Vancouver.  And, the wine cellar - well, that was the whole point of the tour, wasn't it?

Tribute to Mom

A blog post on mother's day would be incomplete without a photo of my mom.  She happens to be the best mom ever.

And here are a few more amazing moms I've met along the way.

That Fabulous Toothless Grin

One of my boys lost both of his top teeth a few days ago.  Everytime he smiles, I am reminded of why it's so important to stop, wonder and just take the picture.  This time in his life will never come again.  It also reminds me of the beauty of photography, the ability to capture the elusive moment that will never return.
